2012 is the International Year of Cooperatives

The United Nations General Assembly has declared 2012 the International Year of Co-operatives. The theme, “Cooperative Enterprises Build a Better World,” highlights the fact that cooperatives benefit their communities through socio-economic development, leading to poverty reduction, employment generation, and social integration.

The UN has three major goals for International Year of Cooperatives:

  • Increase awareness of cooperatives and their benefits
  • Promote growth of cooperatives
  • Encourage governments to establish appropriate laws and regulation to assist with growth

The following video by the National Cooperative Business Association illustrates the impact co-ops have on both communities and individuals:

The year’s activities primarily focus on information sharing. At SMCU, we are dedicated to educating our members and communities on the importance of co-ops and partnering with fellow cooperatives to help them do the same. The more we work together to increase awareness of co-ops and the benefits we bring, the more we can give back to our communities.
