Identity theft continues to be a major source of fraud and costs consumers millions of dollars each year. In 2010, identity theft was the most reported fraud according to The Federal Trade Commission.
SMCU wants to help you protect your good name and credit by making it easy for you to get rid of sensitive documents that you no longer need.
On Saturday, October 15, we are holding a free Shred Day at our Northgate, Georgetown and Southcenter branches. Between 10am and 2pm, representatives from Shred-It will be standing by at all three locations with shredding trucks. Bring two file boxes or one garbage bag of documents to have them securely and professionally shredded.
Get the peace of mind that comes from knowing that you are doing everything you can to safeguard your private data. While you are at the branch, stop in to say hi and enjoy some refreshments. Talk to our trained branch staff about other ways to protect your accounts and credit.

When you say garbage bag..can I do a big black one?
1 large black garbage bag is more than appropriate.
Your response is confusing. Does it mean that 1 large black garbage bag is MORE than what will be accepted, or does it mean that 1 large black garbage bag will be OK. Thanks for clarifying, and thanks for holding this event.
Sorry for the confusion. 1 large black garbage bag is a very appropriate amount to bring to Shred Day.
We suggest the limit only to prevent local businesses from using our shredders for truck loads of documents. Don’t feel like you have to pack absolutely everything into one bag. If you have a little bit more, we’re not going to turn you away.
Since the question about a large black garbage bag is really about the upper end of the limit, does “more than appropriate” mean “ok, very appropriate” or “over the limit, inappropriate”?
This is great. I just recently moved and have a box of sensitive documents that I would like sheddred. Great timing and thanks for helping to keep us safe.
All I can say is Thank You for this helpful service to the community. Whether it is a large or small black garbage bag, the real point is that getting things professionally shredded can be expensive. Glad SMCU offers this to the community at large and NOT just SMCU clients.
Well thank you! We always have a lot of fun with this very popular event. It is a great way to meet new people in our neighborhoods. Hope to see you next time!
I can’t make the 15th! darn! Will you do another one soon?
If both you and your spouse have accounts at SMCU can you bring 2 big black rubbish bags and/or up to 4 file boxes? Never have taken advantage of something like this before and have several years worth of confidential papers. Thank for your response in advance.
Sorry this response is a bit late, but yes, we’ll gladly take this much from our members. We hope to see you again next time!
When will the next free shred day happen?
We do this twice a year, around the weeks of Earth Day and International Credit Union Day. Look for them in April and October.
