The Three Security Questions

At Seattle Metropolitan Credit Union, your online security has always been a top priority. Along with many other financial institutions, Seattle Metropolitan Credit Union implemented Enhanced Login Security, the three security questions you set up to give you extra protection beyond your username and password.

One-time Password: Easier and More Secure

In February, 2011, we will be adding an easy and very secure way to access your accounts if you are accidentally locked out. Instead of answering the three security questions, you can opt to request a one-time access code that is automatically sent to you. You can choose how you want to receive the one-time pass code from the following options:

  • Phone
  • Text message
  • Email

Watch for a Prompt

The first time you log in after the upgrade goes live, you will be prompted to set up your enhanced security options. You will be asked if you want to enter a phone number or email address where you will receive a one-time pass code if you are ever locked out of Online Banking. Once you set up your Login Security options, your Online Banking experience will remain exactly the same. However, if in the future you log in from a different computer you will be asked to enter the one-time access code as an additional line of defense to prevent unauthorized access.

Three Questions – Still an Option

Whether you’re locked out of your account, or logging in from a new computer, you will still have the option of confirming your identity by answering the three security questions. This option will be available along with the option to log in with the one-time password.

Don’t Take Chances

If you opt to receive a one-time pass code via phone or email, be certain that your mobile phone and email account are password protected. If you lose your phone or your phone or email account are compromised, log in to Online Banking to change your Login Security options immediately, and contact the credit union as soon as possible.

When I’m asked to choose how I would like to receive my Access Code, I’m not allowed to click on any of the options. There is no active link to choose text, phone or email???

We apologize for this inconvenience, but we hope it will be quickly remedied. We have added a link at the top of this article that says “Trouble Logging In?” If this explanation does not help, please give us a call at 206-398-5500. Thank you!

From my view point this is unnecessary & a bother . I’ve been using my PW & the 3 security questions to logon & will continue to do so. From time to time I’ll be using different computers, and I’m prepared to utilize the security questions to logon, as usual. I don’t need a “one time” security number from SMCU – thank you.

I agree it is unnecessary. I originally selected email as the option, but as my web-based email only updates every 30 minutes, and the code expires in 15, it does not work particularly well. There is no way of now disabling the email option.
