Target breach exposes 40 million credit and debit accounts.

U.S. retailer Target announced that between November 27 and December 15, 2013, a network intrusion may have exposed approximately 40 million debit and credit card accounts. Target has “identified and resolved the issue,” and is working with law enforcement to determine the cause and impact of the breach.

At this time, Seattle Metropolitan Credit Union has not been informed how many or whether specific SMCU member accounts were exposed.

If you used your credit or debit cards at Target during the period in which the intrusion is said to have occurred, please be vigilant in reviewing your VISA and checking account statements. You can view your account activity by logging into SMCU’s Online Banking.

If you notice anything unfamiliar or unusual, please let SMCU know right away by calling us at 800-334-2489 during regular business hours or after hours at 866-820-4930 (credit card)/(888) 918-7735 (debit card).

Protecting our members’ financial data is SMCU’s highest priority. We will continue to monitor this situation and will pass along relevant information as we have it.
