Join SMCU on September 29 at the Run Around 5K. Not a runner? No problem. The race is non-competitive, and plenty of participants will be walking rather than running. Proceeds will be donated to the Associated Recreation Council who supports youth scholarships at Rainier and Van Asselt Community Centers for at-risk youth and low-income families.
The race begins at 8:00am in Seward Park and travels around the park loop, finishing where it started.
You can register for the race online or by mail. The online registration fee is discounted before the 29th, so register soon for the biggest savings.
More About the Beneficiaries
The Associated Recreation Council (ARC) is an independent nonprofit organization that funds 38 local community centers. They have provided youth scholarships and financial assistance for more than 35 years, allowing families to participate in recreational and educational programs.
Rainier Community Center currently has 101 children, ages 5-12, on scholarships to participate in childcare and recreational activities at the center. ARC provides 80-100% coverage for these at-risk youth to participate in programs they would otherwise not be able to afford.
Van Asselt Community Center is within 1 mile of 7 elementary schools. 75-100 youth are served through drop-in programs, including sports, cooking, gardening, after-school help, service learning, and childcare.
