Use Rewards Points to Help Earthquake Survivors

If you are a Seattle Metropolitan Credit Union Visa® account holder, you can now use your rewards points to donate to those suffering the aftermath of the Japan earthquake. SMCU and CU Rewards™ have partnered with Charity Choice Gift Cards to allow you to donate reward points to the American Red Cross and their relief efforts in the Pacific, or one of over 150 other carefully selected charities.

It works like this: Through Charity Choice, you redeem your Visa® CU Rewards™ points for donation cards. The amount of the donation card can be directed to as many as three of the organizations listed on Charity Choice’s website. These charities range from those concerned with animal welfare, like the American Humane Society, to those working to alleviate hunger, such as Feeding America. You can also choose local charities, like the Group Health Foundation.

Redeem your donation card right away, or send it as a gift to a loved one and let them decide where the donations should go. Cards are available in denominations of $25, $50 or $100 at a cost of 3,250; 6,500; and 13,000 rewards points, respectively. With the purchase of a Charity Choice Gift Card you will receive a tax acknowledgement letter. You should check with your tax advisor to determine if your purchase is tax deductible as a charitable contribution

To get started, visit to log in to your CU Rewards™ account. If you haven’t created a login, click the Register button in the New Members section. If you would prefer to log in through SMCU’s Online Banking, click on the Visa tab and select your account in the View Your Visa® section. Then look for the CU Rewards™ logos to access CU Rewards™. Once you are in the CU Rewards™ catalog, use the Search box to find the Charity Choice options.

SMCU is excited to be able to offer this avenue for our members to give back to the community. If you have questions about CU Rewards™, please call our Contact Center. For questions regarding the Charity Choice Gift Card program, visit their website at
